![]() Darwin was the first to propose that some of these facial expressions of emotion have their origins in the evolution of the human species. This contrasts with other views that all facial expressions are a product of social learning and culture. What makes the communication of emotions interesting is that it appears as if some of these expressions of emotion (e.g., anger, disgust, fear, happy, sad, surprise, and to a lesser extent contempt, embarrassment, interest, pain, and shame) may be biologically hardwired, and are expressed the same way by all peoples of all cultures. The face is responsible for communicating not only thoughts or ideas, but also emotions.
